Nothing Special

The bigger they are the harder they fall. An area business leader, highly visible in the community and on many boards, was arrested yesterday by the DEA for narcotics possession with intent to distribute. He thought he was pretty special.

It is my humble opinion that he will lose every bit of business he has. We’re talking about contracts that must represent 10s of millions in annual sales if not 100s of millions during boom times. I don’t feel one bit sorry for him.

The people who have my empathy and compassion are the 60 employees who will soon be without jobs as business dries up to nothing; hardworking men and women who will be tainted from guilt by association. I asked my husband this morning if we might be able to find a spot for one or two of them. We can’t. The future is uncertain.

I’m not on any boards, neither is my husband. We do not press the flesh. People who see our advertising and equipment are surprised to discover that we are the force behind it. We work hard. We don’t try to impress anyone with anything other than good quality for an honest dollar. We’re not special. If we fall I hope for a soft landing.

  1. People abuse power. It pisses me off. They should start caning people in the United States. I mean some good, old fashioned, bare-ass, welt-raising butt whipping, done in the town square… on national television…

I happened to be in his business front office on election day 2008. His booming voice touting McCain, NRA, values, Gawd, blah, blah, blah, could be heard throughout the office. The women were snickering, “If you don’t know who to vote for just go in and ask, he’ll tell you who to vote for.” The absolute worst kind of hypocrite.

Yeah, pull his drawers down on national TV and raise a few welts in front of Gawd and everyone.

He has taken a leave of absence from the YMCA board where he had been chairman. This is exactly why we don’t participate in any of the political municipal bullshit. We give to the food pantry, shelter, local library, fuel assistance, and individual families when we can afford to and we never take a receipt for the tax benefit. It isn’t giving if you’re getting something for it.

So troubling — and I fear that the God-damned Old Party is approaching critical mass — and then, we’ll need a new planet to run to!

I’m afraid you’re right, Judith. If Mitt wins, we’re screwed.

Success is fine as long as there’s humility along with it and a sense of societal stewardship.

  3. That is so considerate of you to think about the employees and how your business might be able to help. Kudos to you for the thought.
