The bigger they are the harder they fall. An area business leader, highly visible in the community and on many boards, was arrested yesterday by the DEA for narcotics possession with intent to distribute. He thought he was pretty special.
It is my humble opinion that he will lose every bit of business he has. We’re talking about contracts that must represent 10s of millions in annual sales if not 100s of millions during boom times. I don’t feel one bit sorry for him.
The people who have my empathy and compassion are the 60 employees who will soon be without jobs as business dries up to nothing; hardworking men and women who will be tainted from guilt by association. I asked my husband this morning if we might be able to find a spot for one or two of them. We can’t. The future is uncertain.
I’m not on any boards, neither is my husband. We do not press the flesh. People who see our advertising and equipment are surprised to discover that we are the force behind it. We work hard. We don’t try to impress anyone with anything other than good quality for an honest dollar. We’re not special. If we fall I hope for a soft landing.
